Non-warpaint Version: [link]

"Hannibal ad portus." Lit. "Hannibal is at the gates."

For whatever reason, since seeing "Day of the Black Sun," this phrase, uttered as a portent of misfortune in Rome, stuck in my head. Probably because 1) I'm a history geek and have been equating the Fire Nation with the Roman Empire since the first time I saw the opening credits and 2) "Hakoda" sounds enough like "Hannibal" in my mind theater that I have wanted to do a fanart linking the father of Sokka and Katara to the Carthaginian general who struck such terror in Roman hearts that his name became a stock phrase of terror and ill-omen.

lol. 8D

"Barbarus" is the singular of "barbarian" in Latin, because I am fairly certain the Fire Nation with their fancy ironclads considers anyone from the Southern Water Tribe to be such. I think it adds to the irony of the the COMPLETELY DESTROYED harbor gates. Hee.

i decided that Hakoda's warpaint would include the sign of "leadership" Bato painted on Sokka's head in episode 15 for obvious reasons. I will be posting a version without warpaint (and a much less dramatic background) in my scraps at a later date, for all those who voted on the Hakoda WIP.

Excellent background, especially with the hazy smoke and the crumbled tower pieces. The way the smoke mixes in with the clouds and sky above is great!

I love the way you colored the cloth around Hakoda's waist. It definitely looks worn and battle used. And Hakoda himself is .

Superb coloring job as always. :D
